Location Spotlight: Grass Fields

The grass fields are one of my favourite locations for maternity, motherhood and family photography sessions near Newcastle if your craving something a little different to the beach. Surrounded by long grass, distant mountains and native bushland, this location has a beautifully natural and peaceful feel. It is simple enough to keep the focus on you while still providing plenty of texture, warmth and depth in the background.

One of the things I love most about the grass fields is the sense of space. There is room to walk, move and explore, allowing sessions to feel relaxed rather than overly posed. For maternity sessions, the long grass frames the body beautifully and creates soft, flowing movement around dresses and fabrics. For family sessions, the open space gives children the freedom to run, play and interact naturally while I capture those genuine connections as they unfold.

A seasonal location

The grass fields are best suited to sessions in late autumn, winter and early spring. During these cooler months, the grass often has the warm golden and earthy tones shown throughout this blog, creating a beautiful neutral backdrop for maternity, motherhood and family photography.

The cooler seasons also complement the relaxed, layered and textural styling available from my client wardrobe. Cream, white, rust, brown and other earthy tones work beautifully against the landscape, while flowing fabrics and more dramatic pieces add movement without competing with the natural surroundings.

The appearance of the fields can still vary depending on the season and recent weather. This means no two sessions here will ever look exactly the same, but late autumn, winter and early spring generally offer the most beautiful conditions and colours for this location.

Golden-hour light and open skies

Sessions at the grass fields are held close to sunset, when the light is at its softest and most flattering. As the sun moves lower, it filters through the grass and creates warm highlights, soft shadows and beautiful golden tones.

Because the landscape is so open, we can also make the most of the changing sky. Depending on the weather, this might mean soft pastel colours, dramatic clouds or a clear blue backdrop over the distant hills. As the light changes throughout the session, the location can create a surprising amount of variety without needing to travel between different places. The grass can appear soft and golden in direct sunlight before becoming deeper, moodier and more textured as the sun disappears. This makes the fields particularly suited to the natural, landscape-led style of photography that I love to create.

Perfect for all sessions

The grass fields are especially beautiful for maternity photography. The open landscape celebrates the shape of pregnancy, while the movement of the grass and fabric gives the images an artistic and almost cinematic quality.

There is plenty of privacy and space, making this a wonderful option if you would like to wear one of the more flowing, fitted or skin-showing pieces from my client wardrobe. We can create a mixture of gentle, connected photographs and stronger, more artistic maternity portraits within the same session.

This is also a beautiful setting for motherhood sessions. The simplicity of the landscape allows the connection between you and your children to remain at the centre of every image.

A relaxed choice for family photography

For families, the open fields give children room to move without the session feeling restricted. We can walk through the grass, play games, cuddle, explore and allow plenty of natural interaction to happen.

Rather than asking young children to sit still and smile for every photograph, I gently guide your family into movement and connection. This creates images that feel relaxed, joyful and true to your family while still making the most of the beautiful landscape surrounding you.

As with any natural outdoor location, the grass, weather and light can vary. This is part of what makes sessions here so unique. If there is a particular photograph or seasonal look from this location that you love, please let me know when booking. I can recommend the best time of year and session date to give us the greatest chance of creating something similar for you.

If you’re looking for a natural outdoor location for your Newcastle maternity or family photography session, the grass fields offer beautiful light, warm earthy colours and plenty of space to simply slow down and enjoy being together. For the best experience and most beautiful seasonal backdrop, I recommend booking this location in late autumn, winter or early spring.
